National Express lose East Coast

National Express are set to lose the lucrative East Coast franchise after talks with the government failed at the weekend.

The move comes after disappointing passenger growth, and follows NX boss Richard Bowker's resignation on Tuesday.

A public-owned operator will take over until the franchise is re-let next year.

Flying start for Southeastern's Javelins

Southeastern's new Class 395 Javelin EMUs entered service yesterday, some six months ahead of schedule. Originally pencilled in for a December start, the first service was Monday's 0648 Ashford-St Pancras, reaching the capital in just 37 minutes. A 'shadow' timetable is expected to continue until December when Hitachi complete deliveries of the 29-strong fleet.

(thanks to Milepost 91 for kindly supplying the Javelin photo)
