I'd expect a third one to be on it's way soon!

I did hear, yesterday, that the planned changeover of 'Voyagers' to 'HSTs' for the new timetable isn't going to occur on 14th Dec. at all (timetable-change-day) but on "New Years Eve at the earliest; possibly new years day"...not that it makes a right-lot of difference in the long run; just a few more-'crowded'-than-normal 'Voyagers' for a fortnight!!

I think although they've hoped to have the 5 HSTs available for the December timetable (and various press releases confirm this) as the franchise commitment to have '35% extra peak capacity on the NE/SW route' isn't required until the end of 2009, (because the 220/221s all have to be converted as well), they still have a lot of wriggle room if the trains aren't available, or need a bit of rework for reliability purposes...

(edit)
Perhaps the 5 221s that go to the Virgin Holyhead Euston won't be so urgently needed as they aren't starting service immediately either. Assuming VWC play ball of course, as they have their interior conversion programme to do as well...

Quick question, what is the likelihood of the HSTs visiting Manchester Pic on a weekend? I'm going on an XC service to Birmingham on the 6th and wanted to know how likely I am to get one of them.

Does anyone know if the HST diagrams are also changing when the timetables change or will they be staying the same until all the HST sets are in service?

One goes west of it as well! but it is worth remembering that the HSTs are for the core Edinburgh to Plymouth corridor, so it's good that there's even one north and one west of that; I notice none to beyong Plymouth!!

I posted the diagrams (based on information in the FGW published timetables) ten days ago - you may have missed them then. They include times at NewSt and Leeds:

To be fair to XC, there has never been any official suggestion that all the HSTs would run to the 'full extremities' of the NE/SW axis. One of the early ideas mentioned in various rail mags was to run them in both directions through the midlands in both peaks, we were discussing how could it possibly be done way back when it was first mentioned. The actual solution they've come up with, ie all four running North - South am and return pm, wasn't really predicted if I recall correctly...

It's true that it'll be a shame to lose the current interim arrangement of an HST leaving Glasgow at 09:00 (although I hope to take it next week). But the HSTs are there to increase capacity, and it's in the core of the network, not the extremities, that they are needed the most.

Anyone know the current position on XC HST's,

From various sources including here I understand,

2x refurbished an in service.
1x refurbished on running up the miles before it can enter service.
2x at Wabtec getting refurbished.

If I at Leeds at about 13:00 tomorrow (which I will be) it should be a safe bet I will get to have a ride on one of these no matter which direction I take?

Had my first ride on an XC HST today, I know many of you will already know what they have done to them but here is my view.

Each coach now has one toilet, with seating where the other toilet was. If i remember correctly each coach has 82 seats so having 1 toilet for that many people isn't really a hardship when you consider a lot of regional trains have 1 toilet for 148 passengers. As discussed before the electronic reservations is on the HST's as well, the lips over the windows as a result (which are not intrusive) look like they could have had curtains in before. (i know they didn't).

I guess it must be to match up with the voyagers but it is the opposite way to all other HST's first class is coach a with the TGS coach H.

Most people will have seen the red seat colours and the light grey carpet, time will tell if the carpet is too light. A lot of airline seats and although there are tables on the coach I don't know if they have overdone the airline seating.

Didn't have a chance to look in first class or at the galley, the staff implied that it was only a trolley store which would be consistant with arriva's policy of trolley only. I don't know how much more fuel dragging a buffet around would cost arriva but I think they should I have stuck with the buffet. The trolley had a very limited selection when it went by and I was glad I got something to eat at Leeds, I will make sure that I have something from the stations when I am using XC from now onwards. North of Edinburgh there was no catering at all, Aberdeen is still a long way so again they could be losing revenue not even having a trolley.

The standard class seat were a massive improvements on the IC70 - but I know people will disagree with me (I have been on both today but admit I don't like the IC70's).

Overall a very good refurbishment, I will certainly look out for using the HST's where possible. Otherwise I will continue to travel via London. Yes I know it is sad but travelling on an overcrowded 4 car voyager just is not nice when alternatives exist.

I too had my first experience this week, travelling down from Glasgow to Sheffield on Tuesday. Didn't catch the numbers, but it was one of the two (maybe now three) sets in full colours. Inside was very impressive indeed; I too am a big fan of the new seats and the window / seat alignment seemed much better than on the Voyagers. But then the Voyagers are heaps of s***e anyway

Great ride quality, comfy seats, and good lighting, although nice old style bing-bong before PA announcements that reminded me of EMT's HSTs.

Only minor notes... our set's outside decals had two coach Fs and no coach G (although the lettering inside was fine). A simple mistake and hopefully an obvious one that passengers could be expected to solve for themselves, but there were a surprisingly large number of thickos who couldn't. The doors between the passenger saloon and the vestibule in my coach were very noisy though - a terrible shriek every time they closed.
